Mechatronics Technician (1 year term)

This position will be responsible for routine maintenance and upkeep of the Environmental Sample Processor (ESP) Technology Transfer Laboratory and will assist in supporting engineering elements of the ESP program.  Specific duties may include the repair/upkeep of ESP instruments, and assisting with the preparation/breakdown of instruments before/after deployments.  Some travel may be required to assist with field deployments.

Ideally, the person in this position:

  • Has a keen curiosity about how things work at the intersection of molecular biology, robotics, and ocean science.
  • Has demonstrated experience maintaining computer controlled electro-mechanical systems.
  • Is familiar with the Unix/Linux shell and at least one other scripting language (Ruby, Python and/or Matlab).
  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment where new funding opportunities frequently result in focal area pivots.

Associates degree in a scientific or technical field is required; a bachelor’s degree is preferred.  The candidate should enjoy disassembling and rebuilding precision-made, customized electro-mechanical systems and understand enough computer programming to be able to run/test such systems.  Prior experience with robotics programming frameworks (ROS, Arduino, etc.) is a plus.  This position will require working independently and occasionally during off hours. This position will be a critical part of a diverse team comprised of both scientists and engineers; thus, working well with others is of paramount importance.
