MBARI seeks a motivated Mechanical Engineering Technician to work as part of a multidisciplinary team with scientists, engineers and marine operations personnel on the design, fabrication, testing and maintenance of various platforms and instruments for ocean science research. Duties may include assignments that are complex in nature where considerable judgment is required in resolving problems and making recommendations.
The candidate must have a familiarity with a range of basic machines and hand tools: mill, lathe, drill press, saws, etc. Ability to move a concept through design, fabrication, assembly, and testing to a final product and delivered on time is required. Experience with SolidWorks, MasterCam or similar CAD/CAM programs, familiarity with a variety of materials (plastics, metals, composites) and ability to interpret both mechanical and electrical drawings/schematics is highly desirable.
Associate Degree in Engineering or related field or equivalent experience and demonstrated success as a technician required. Good communications skills, self-starter, ability to multi-task and a commitment to improving skills are critical.Experience in one or more of the following areas are desired: Molding with epoxies and elastomers, TIG and or MIG welding, shipboard/small boat operations, CNC programing. The position may require participation on at-sea oceanographic expeditions for specified periods.
