The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute is seeking an experienced Active Directory and Windows Server Administrator that is driven to bring quality and passion to their work supporting our organization. In the pursuit of better understanding the ocean, MBARI heavily emphasizes an environment of collaboration across all of our teams of researchers, engineers, and staff. Located directly on the beach in Moss Landing, CA, our offices and facilities also support this collaborative effort by providing unprecedented access to the ocean.

Reporting to the Information Systems Manager, you will contribute directly to designing, deploying, and maintaining the operation and security of information systems in use at MBARI. Primarily focusing on Windows Servers and Active Directory, you will also have the opportunity to expand your knowledge in other focus areas including but not limited to website and web server administration. 

Active Directory and Windows Servers are an integral part of many systems at MBARI. As such, this position is also expected to regularly collaborate with internal and external teams in troubleshooting various systems and software to ensure the appropriate, secure, and ongoing integration with Active Directory as well as to ensure their compatibility with supported versions of Windows Servers.

Base Qualifications

  • General knowledge of Active Directory installation, configuration, and maintenance.
  • General knowledge of the installation, configuration, upgrading, and management of Microsoft Windows Server 2012/2019 systems.
  • General knowledge of LDAP and Kerberos authentication (e.g., SSO).
  • General knowledge of Active Directory integration and federation with other systems (i.e., ADFS and similar authentication for cloud services)
  • General knowledge of Multi-Factor Authentication.
  • Driven to create technical documentation in the pursuit of providing better support
  • Working knowledge of Windows scripting (e.g., PowerShell).
  • Working knowledge of patch management methodologies and tools.
  • Willingness to expand and learn about other technologies (e.g., web servers, storage, etc)
  • Willingness to assist other team members and outside teams in troubleshooting, identifying root causes, and recommending solutions.
  • Must be able to work with diverse groups of people.

Desired Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of Multi-Forest Active Directory.
  • Working knowledge of containerized applications.
  • Working knowledge of both physical and virtualized systems.
  • General knowledge of WordPress Administration.
  • General knowledge of system orchestration and/or automation platforms.
  • General knowledge of web and Java application server administration (e.g., IIS, Apache, Tomcat), including server security configuration and SSL certificate management.

Must be willing to go to sea for occasional short specified periods.

Salary range: $98,296 – $161,364/year
