2017 Summer Intern Profile: David Jumes
Name: David Jumes
Project/Mentor: Laser Raman Spectroscopy with Peter Brewer and Ed Peltzer
School: Lawrence University
Hometown: Appleton, Wisconsin
Tell us about your project:
I will be using Raman spectroscopy to look at and characterize different sea water environments by changing temperature, pressure, and salinity. I’ve already processed some previously collected data using MATLAB and 5-Gaussian distributions to see how the spectra changes.
Why did you want to intern for MBARI:
This is a perfect blend between environmental and physical chemistry, two topics I find interesting. I had a great internship with MOTE Marine Laboratory last summer working on an ocean acidification project, but I wanted something that focused a bit more on the chemistry. I’ve also never seen the west coast before, so it was also great excuse to check out California.
What’s been your favorite part of MBARI so far:
I got to control the right arm on the ROV Doc Ricketts and spend one night on the R/V Western Flyer. I’m looking forward to listening to my fellow interns present their summer projects, along with playing with the laser in lab.
And, if you had a boat, what would you name it? The Lonely Island
