HVAC Mechanical Technician

The HVAC Mechanical Technician ensures that all MBARI facilities and equipment are properly maintained. This includes, but is not limited to, performing all tasks associated with the proper operation and maintenance of HVAC and mechanical systems, water treatment system, chilled water system, cooling tower and condenser water system, boilers and hot water system. In addition, this individual monitors trends, inspects, analyzes, troubleshoots and executes building repairs as appropriate. The HVAC Mechanical Technician conducts preventative maintenance inspections to identify problems and take necessary action (i.e., services equipment, performs repairs, documents status, etc.). This includes building HVAC mechanical systems, as well as sensitive equipment such as fire and burglar alarm systems, fire sprinkler systems, emergency generators, and refrigeration systems, to name a few.  In addition, the incumbent ensure the safe and proper functioning of equipment for seawater systems in labs, and a test tank with related equipment.

The HVAC Mechanical Technician must maintain a clean, safe working environment. This individual cross-trains other technicians and staff in preventative maintenance, trouble-shooting, and repairing HVAC, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and other areas as appropriate. The HVAC Mechanical Technician responds to after-hours emergencies and alarms as required.

Minimum high school diploma or equivalent plus a minimum five years of related experience required.  Trade school certification or college degree desirable.  EPA Refrigerant certification a plus.  Must possess solid experience with complex building systems, including HVAC, electrical, mechanical, chillers, boilers, pumps/valves, seawater distribution, air compressors, plumbing, refrigeration, and building management systems. Knowledge and experience with proper and safe usage of hand and power tools. Proven ability to perform repairs. Must be computer literate, due to the fact that many systems throughout the Institute are automated. Ability to read, understand and work from drawings, specifications, schematics and technical manuals is required. Must be knowledgeable of local and state building codes and OSHA regulations as they apply to building maintenance, operations, and construction

The incumbent must possess excellent analytical and organizational skills. Timely follow-up is required. Must be able to effectively and positively work as part of a team and individually when necessary.  Forklift, scissor lift and boom lift experience desired. Must be able to work with diverse groups of people. Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills in order to interface with employees in a courteous and professional manner.  Must be able lift, carry, push or pull medium weights, up to 50 lbs. Must be able to work in confined spaces and on roof tops. Use of ladder is important. Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record is required. Requires activities involving being around moving machinery.
