Biology and Ecosystems Data Analyst

The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) is recruiting a Data Analyst with a focus on biology and ecosystem data to assist in the integration and management. The successful candidate will hold a minimum of a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in one or more of the following themes: computer science, informatics, and a scientific discipline such as biology, chemistry or physics. Experience in programming in one or more of Python, R Studio, and/or Matlab is required. Experience in marine ecology, oceanographic research, analysis of data over spatial and/or temporal domains, numerical models, remote sensing and statistics is beneficial.

The Data Analyst will be part of a team of experts working on integrating data from a wide assortment of sources including academic researchers, and local, state and federal agencies. This includes data from the domains of physics, biogeochemistry, biology and ecology. The integration of data then enables the production of value added data products to help address applied science challenges including understanding the impacts of climate change and anthropogenic activities on marine biodiversity and ecosystem function.

Major responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Contribute to regional data management activities;
  • Ensure data and its use meets requirements for interoperability, best practices, and quality control / quality assurance;
  • Maintain and refresh existing data source catalogues, metadata, and data stream plans;
    Integrate new data into data portal systems.

The post will be based at MBARI, which is located in Moss Landing, CA. The postholder will work closely with the Marine Biodiversity Observation Network (MBON) and the Central and Northern California Ocean Observing System (CeNCOOS) of the US Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS). MBARI has an active technical community with others working in the fields of biological, chemical, and physical oceanography, marine geology, and ocean engineering. Opportunities to participate in fieldwork are available, which can provide an understanding of data collection. This is a term position, with an expected duration of up to twelve months with a possible extension, based on availability of funds.
