Getting started

Preparing for a cruise

Wet lab

  • At home port: The cold room, ambient seawater and chilled seawater will be shut down and unavailable when the vessel arrives at home port. These systems cannot remain on when the vessel is unattended as sometimes the vessel sits in the mud at the dock in Moss Landing, or systems may clog or leak resulting in possible damage to the vessel and samples.
  • During expeditions: When the vessel docks away from home port during an expedition, the cold room and ambient/chilled seawater remain running. During these port stops the vessel is manned 24 hours, and samples can remain chilled if they return to home port on the vessel.
  • The wet lab includes a -80C freezer (~23-25 cubic ft) and an upright 4C refrigerator (~23 cubic ft.)
