Travel Information

Transportation, lodging, and meals (other than those included in the workshop) are the responsibility of the participant.

Airports

Several airports service the Monterey and San Francisco Bay areas:

On The Ground

Moss Landing is a small harbor town located approximately halfway between Monterey and Santa Cruz. The most convenient and inexpensive way to get to and from MBARI is by car. Please see the travel directions to MBARI for directions from your point of arrival.

Monterey Airbus provides shuttle service between Monterey and the San Jose and San Francisco airports for approximately US$35-45 each way.

A variety of airport shuttle services for the Santa Cruz area are available: Santa Cruz Airporter, Surf City Shuttle, Santa Cruz Experience, Early Bird. Prices range from US$60-over $100 each way.

Unfortunately, train service to or around the Monterey Bay area does not exist.

Public transit between Monterey and Moss Landing is available via Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST). Travel times can take over 1hour (each direction) and requires travel on two routes: Monterey - Marina (#20) and Marina - Moss Landing (#27).

Public transit between Santa Cruz and Moss Landing is available via Santa Cruz Metro routes 69A, 69W, 71 or 91 to Watsonville where you make a connection to the MST # 27 mentioned above. Again, please allow plenty of travel time.

Accommodations

NEW: The block of rooms at the special rate of $140 + taxes at the Hotel Pacific is full. Other hotels centrally located in downtown Monterey include the Monterey Marriot, Portola Hotel and Spa and the Monterey Hotel. There are also numerous options on Munras Avenue in Monterey.

Lodging in the immediate Moss Landing area is limited as it is a small fishing village that is very quiet at night, but abundant options in all price ranges can be found in the Monterey area to the south and Santa Cruz area to the north. In addition to the accommodation options suggested here, choices abound on all the major travel sites.

A list of weekly vacation rental options has also been compiled for any participants wishing to stay in the area longer.

Dining

A continental breakfast, beverages, and afternoon snacks will be provided for all participants during the workshop.

There are several dining options available in Moss Landing for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Most are within walking distance.

Monterey Bay Area Information

The communities surrounding the Monterey Bay offer extensive outdoor activities on land and by sea as well as a great diversity of artistic, cultural, historical, and dining experiences. To the south of Moss Landing, lies the city of Monterey and the surrounding communities of Carmel, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach and the spectacular Big Sur coast. To the north is the university town of Santa Cruz with lively neighboring communities which stretch from the beaches to the redwoods.

Information about visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium (a sister institution to MBARI) can be found here.

For further travel or logistical information about the area, please contact Nancy Jacobsen at MBARI.
