At the beach, smiling

Maya at the beach

We first met her when she was only two weeks old and a tiny fluff-ball.

D'Kamron Maya's Poem is her name, after Maya Angelou. Miss Maya, Maya-poo, Scootch-poo, Cuddle-pup, Fuzz-butt, Sweetness, Maya Lovett; the many endearments for a beloved dog.

Peeking under wild strawberry leaves to find the juicy berries.

Playing with her sister, Shadow. Black, curly twins with matching "spring and twist" agility.

Disarming and playing with the loner, fear-biter, pit-bull in puppy class.

Holding her "sit-stay" in dog school even when a much bigger dog broke loose and sniffed everyone's butts.

Advancing eagerly up the hill to play with a large buck, who didn't want to play, and was pawing, snorting, and standing his ground. Shy later about a doe, who was keeping a close watch and charging at Maya if she moved.

Favorite squeaker toys were Shell of a hedge-hog and Platypus.

Remembering exactly where she'd left a huge, greasy bone outside, and sneaking it inside in the middle of the night, onto our bed.

So excited about a snow-poodle I'd carved outside the window, until she got to sniff it and immediately lost interest.

Greeting the crazy Zoe puppy with, "Can't you send her back?", accepting her, maintaining alpha status without a fight, and becoming inseparable best buddies with her.

Black spot on her tongue.

Curled up under the table during a dinner party, only appearing to be asleep.

Happy to go anywhere, everywhere, do anything, with us.

Sitting up in the back seat of the car, just like a little people.

Knowing from the bed that it was raining and preferring to stay warm and dry: "I can hold it for the day, thank you very much!"

Discovering that sitting on my thermarest chair was much better than the cold, hard ground when camping.

Four-paw drive.

Rolling in dead stuff on the beach. Mmmmmm.

Sharing the couch with us.

Cheese fiend.

"Some (people) come into our lives and quickly go,
others stay awhile and leave footprints on our hearts,
and we are never, ever the same again."
