John Graybeal is a member of MBARI's Software and Data Systems team, in the Research and Development division. He oversees (and occasionally contributes to) development of the Shore Side Data System, and is the Principal Investigator for the Marine Metadata Interoperability Project.

Within the last two years, John's focus has necessarily shifted to national and international data system development efforts. Key MBARI data projects, including the Shore Side Data System, will depend on effective interoperation with external projects. This will demand standard protocols and standard terminologies. The efforts to build data management standards, in both communications and metadata ontologies, will be critical to successfully building a data management solutions that meets MBARI science needs.

Before coming to MBARI, John worked for Sterling Software at NASA Ames Research Center as a project manager and data systems engineer. He worked on the Kuiper Airborne Observatory (doing systems development and operation support) and the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (developing its next-generation data systems). He also worked on NASA's authentication and privacy project and the FAA's air traffic automation project, the Center TRACON Automation System.

John received a BA in statistics and computer science from UC-Berkeley in 1982.
