Mastocarpus Tetrasporophyte

The tetrasporophyte really looks like hot tar here. You can see that it is getting baked out on the rocks. Being a mid to high intertidal species, Mastocarpus has evolved to cope with the desication and high salinity that comes with being baked on the rocks. It would seem that black isn't the best color to avoid the heat.
