Gracilariopsis and Phyllospadix
These are the seeds of the surf grass Phyllospadix. The seeds are released into the water, and they seem to be quite adept at snagging on to the bases of Gracilariopsis tufts. In the first picture you can see clumps of seeds glomming onto a poor clump of gracilaria. This clump was under about 6 inches of sand when I ripped it from its home on West Beach at Hopkins. Check out the incredible Phyllospadix page to learn more about this incredibly devious plant.
