Fauchea: GlossaryHerein is a listing of some definitions that might help you parse through this and other botany sites. Credit for most definitions goes to Abbott and Hollenberg from their book. Again, for other definitions not seen here, look to the glossary in the sidebar at left. If not in there, just google it. Carpogonium (pl. Carpogonia) - In Rhodophyta, the female sex cell that includes the ovum. Terminal in the carpogonial branch. Carpospores - Spores produced by the fertilization of the carpogonium by the spermatium and stored within the cystocarp on the carposporophyte on the female gametophyte. Carposporophyte - A multicellular diploid phase that grows on the female gametophyte and produces carpospores. Retained by the pericarp of the female plant. Cruciate - Refering to the division of a tetraspore in two different planes that are perpendicular to eachother. Cystocarp - aka Gonimoblast. Includes pericarp of female plant that covers the carposporophyte and the carposporophyte itself. Diatom - a unicellular photosynthetic planktonic algae. Dichotomous - Branching by forking. Pairs only; bifurcate. Diploid - Having two sets of chromosomes (2n) Epiphytic - Growing on the surface of another plant, but usually not parasitic Flabellate - Fan shaped Filamentous construction - Hairlike, having single rows of cells. Haploid - Having only a single set of chromosomes (n) Intertidal - The littoral zone, or foreshore. Ocean zone covered by the highest normal tides and exposed by the lowest normal tides. Includes the entire tide pool environs. Pericarp - Sterile layer of cells derived from female plant and enclosing the carposporophyte. Pit plugs - Narrow cytoplasmic connection between cells in Rhodophyta. Spermatium (pl. spermatia) - In Rhodophyta, the male gamete. Unique because it lacks a flagellum. Subtidal - The area directily beneath, or beyond, the Intertidal, or littoral. Sometimes called the sublittoral. Ocean zone covered by the lowest normal tides (ie: never exposed) and existing only on the continental shelf. Tetraspores - Haploid spore produced by tetrasporophyte that grows into female and male gametophyte life stages in Rhodophyta and in Dictyotales, a phaeophyte. Tetrasporophyte - In Rhodopyhta, plant life phase that grows from diploid carpospore and produces haploid tetraspores.
