  • basal - near point of attachment to substratum
  • basipetal - in direction from apex to base
  • benthic - attached to substratum, not planktonic
  • biaxial - having two axial cell rows
  • biflagellate - having two flagella
  • bifurcate - divided into two parts, forked
  • bilateral - having two sides
  • biseriate - arranged in two series or rows
  • bisporangia - sporangia that divides to produce 2 spores perhaps by mitotic division, in Corallinales and some other Rhodophyta
  • blade - flat, leaf-like structure
  • boreal - northern, colder waters
  • branchlets - smallest pigmented branches or secondary branches, ramuli
  • bulbous - swollen
