Postelsia palmaeformis was first described in 1852
near Bodega Bay, CA by Franz Joseph Ruprecht.
Perhaps the most characteristic alga of the North American
coastline, Postelsia bears strong resemblance to
the terrestrial palm tree - hence its more common name, the sea palm.
