After earning a B.A. in History from Wellesley College, with a concentration in Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences at M.I.T., Dr. Worden remained at M.I.T. for two years as a research technician. She then moved to the University of Georgia, where she received a NASA Earth Systems Science Fellowship (1996-1999) and completed her Ph.D. in Ecology in 2000.
After her Ph.D., Dr. Worden spent 3.5 years conducting research on microbial interactions as an NSF Microbial Biology Post-doctoral Fellow at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, before accepting an Assistant Professorship at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, University of Miami. In 2007 she joined the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), where she is presently leads a microbial ecology research group.
Dr. Worden’s interests are in population regulation of photoautotrophic microbes with an emphasis on carbon cycling in marine systems. Her group employs a range of methods and technologies, from sea-going oceanography to genomics and metagenomics. To learn more about Alex’s research and lasb group please go to the Worden Lab Website.
