Seismicity in the Monterey Bay Region

MBARI seismic stations

The MOISE site (~40 km off-shore in Monterey Bay) represents an optimal test site for several reasons:

It is located within reach of MBARI for day trips (2 hours of ship time, each way)

It is located west of the San Gregorio fault and thus will represent the westernmost broadband site in central and northern California, potentially providing unique data for the study of moderate seismic events and regional tectonics.

The soft bay sediments which cover the ocean floor at this location are representative of those which are likely to be encountered in ocean basins around the world, giving an opportunity to assess the performance of broadband seismometers installed in such a setting.
