What is MOISE?
MOISE is an international cooperative
program between the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), the University of California at Berkeley Seismographic
Station (BSS), the Institut de
Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP) and
the Division
Technique de l'Institut National des Sciences de l'Univers
(DT/INSU) in Paris, France, and the Laboratoire de
Geophysique Marine of the University de Bretagne Occidentale
(UBO), in Brest, France.
What will MOISE do?
The goal of MOISE is to deploy, for a
period of 3 months, a digital
broadband seismometer package on the
ocean floor, as well as a CTD/pressure gauge package, with the
help of the ROV
Ventana system provided by MBARI. The
location of the deployment is in Monterey
Bay, 40 km off-shore in the vicinity of
the San Gregorio fault. The seismometer package is contributed by
IPGP and DT/INSU, whereas the recording system, ROV and ship time
are contributed by MBARI. The BSS contributes software
development and expertise in data encoding, decoding and
archival. An independent electromagnetic sensor
package, contributed by UBO, will be deployed simultaneously.
