Margin Seismology
Deployment methodology for Guralp Broadband Seismometer

1. Select site based on results from previous experiments

  • Sediment typical of continental margin
  • Burial of sensor package is essential
2. Bury caisson to prepare site in sediment for broadband seismometer deployment

3. Carry instrument to seafloor and place instrument into caisson

4. Connect logger to instrument to instrument and verify viability and orientation

  • Requires ROV to connect to seismometer through logger

5. Disconnect ROV and infill annulus with glass beads

6. Allow to settle for two days

7. Connect ROV to logger and send commands to unlock gymbals and level sensors
  • Requires connecting ROV to instrument for 30 minutes to 1 hour

8. Cover sensor with a lexan top hat and canvas skirt to dampen bottom current noise

9. Return and check instrument Download data Re-level if necessary Connect second battery pack

10. Return and shutdown experiment

  • Lock gymbals in sensor package
  • Shutdown logger
  • Disconnect battery pack
  • Recover logger and sensor package with ROV
