1997 MBARI Ocean-bottom Seismometer Deployments

Goals

  • Develop and field test new instrumentation deployed by ROV
  • Accurate locations of modern seismicity along San Gregorio and Monterey Bay Fault Zones
  • Determine focal mechanisms for earthquakes for each fault segment
  • Correlate modern seismicity with geological structures in Monterey Bay

Goals of 1997 Deployment

  • Deploy broadband sensor package with extended battery pack (MOISE project)
  • Extended deployment of corehole seismometer with L-CHEAPO data logger
  • Initial deployment of seismonument with LP-1 data logger
Data Acquisition from 1997
  • Seafloor array closely spaced to facilitate instrument comparisons
  • Many different types of instruments with different response characteristics
  • Few instruments were deployed for the entire three-month period
