Delivering earthquake alerts to California
Wednesday — January 18, 2012
Pacific Forum — 3:00 p.m.
The current ShakeAlert project is running a test earthquake alert system that delivers warnings to a group of test users. The warnings can range from seconds to tens of seconds which is enough time to take cover, stop hazardous equipment, isolate hazardous chemicals, pause eye surgery, and take many different kinds of actions that will reduce the impact of the earthquake and minimize the recovery time. The seminar will include a summary of how it is possible to provide these alerts, the current status of the system, and the plans for future development and implementation.
