Biological systems represent a spectacular repertoire of solutions for diverse and complex environmental challenges.  The capabilities of an individual organism, however, are constrained by its evolution in a physicochemically coupled environmental framework.  I will demonstrate how this works to our advantage as it allows us to construct mathematical models of biological networks that can explain and predict how they would behave in new environments.  This has important implications for how we exploit biological information for effective and responsible management of natural resources.
