Australian Marine Biodiversity-from Discovery to Delivery
Friday - February 6, 2009
Pacific Forum – 12:00 p.m.
Australia is megadiverse, and much of its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is still little-studied. I'll talk about some of the methods we are using to discover what is there, as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible, and some of the things we are discovering. But this is the 21st century - the influence of people is everywhere including the oceans - times are tough - and organizations like CSIRO are not funded just to "discover" things. Our task is to deliver results that help people charged with almost impossible tasks - to protect biodiversity, to manage multiple uses of resources under uncertainty, to manage marine protected areas, to predict the effects of climate changes, etc. I'll discuss some of the ways we help with those tasks whilst continuing the journey of discovery.
