Across the Great Divide: Bringing Complex Science to the Public
Wednesday - June 3, 2009
Pacific Forum – 3:00 p.m.
There is a gap – some would say an abyss – between what scientists and the public understand about the sea. In a recent national study of ocean literacy, California, with its miles of shoreline and commitment to managing its coast, barely received a C. (Massachusetts, another coastal state with a rich maritime history, received an F.)
Smithsonian Ocean: Our Water Our World is the companion to the new, permanent Sant Ocean Hall at the National Museum of Natural History, the nation’s most heavily visited museum. Deborah Cramer, Visiting Scholar at MIT’s Earth System Initiative, talks about her new book, and the journey bringing complex marine science to a broader audience.
