The Adventures of the Autonomous Benthic Explorer
Wednesday - April 15, 2009
Pacific Forum – 3:00 p.m.
The Autonomous Benthic Explorer (ABE) is a deep ocean AUV developed at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Its development started in the early ‘90s and has followed a strange and interesting path ever since. ABE has now completed over 200 deep deployments in the service of science in both the North and South Atlantic and Pacific. The scientific results of ABE’s work have been reported elsewhere. This talk will focus on how ABE was conceived, how it evolved over its long career and will highlight some of its many triumphs and disasters as it fought to wrest answers from the Old Man of the Sea.
