The Smithsonian's Ocean Initiative
Wednesday- July 16, 2008
Pacific Forum – 3:00 p.m.
In response to the dire situation faced by our ocean planet, the Smithsonian Institution has launched an Ocean Initiative in partnership with NOAA and in collaboration with the Monterey Bay Aquarium and other leading ocean science organizations. With a comprehensive ocean education program, an enhanced marine science program, and an ocean endowment, the initiative seeks to usher in a new wave of ocean literacy. A cornerstone of the initiative will be a new 23,000 square-foot Ocean Hall, opening in September, which will showcase the diversity of marine organisms, emphasize the importance of the ocean to all life, and educate visitors about human impacts and conservation efforts. The Ocean Hall will be augmented by a website reaching millions more visitors, as well as an extensive series of public programs. This exhibition, communication, education and research initiative is the largest in the history of the Smithsonian, and reflects the Smithsonian’s commitment to making Planet Ocean a centerpiece of its activities.
