The Sanctuary Integrated Monitoring Network (SIMoN) was initiated by central California scientists and resource managers in the year 2000. The goal of SIMoN is an ecosystem monitoring program to detect natural and human induced changes to resources of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. By gathering summary information on existing monitoring efforts, rescuing historical datasets, and funding new monitoring efforts, trends in natural resources can be assessed. These, in turn, are presented to the decision makers and the public through a web site and a “SIMoN Says” report. At this seminar, the SIMoN program will be described, and relevance to MBARI staff will be outlined in terms of accessing monitoring information, obtaining research funds, and finding avenues for applying research to resource management.
