S.E.A. Lab Monterey Bay: Science, Education, and Adventure, Oh My!Rachel Saunders Wednesday, February 2, 2000 Science. Education. Adventure. The S.E.A. Lab Monterey Bay is an exciting new educational experience targeted for children and teachers and is set to embark on its maiden voyage this July. The program will provide a unique learning experience—one that fosters a life-long sense of excitement, scientific understanding, and respect for our oceans. As important, S.E.A. Lab Monterey Bay will instill and inspire stewardship values in today’s youth that will protect our oceans of tomorrow. As a new "residential" ocean science camp located along the shores of the majestic Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, S.E.A. Lab will offer a unique and intensive learning experience that is high tech, conservation-oriented, and fun! Children will learn what science can teach them about our oceans and the role that they will play as future ocean stewards. Student teachers will have the opportunity to hone their skills in this hands-on setting and learn new activities to bring back to the classroom. S.E.A. Lab Monterey Bay will not only energize young people about science and the sea, it will also serve as a model for a nation-wide network of ocean science camps tied to our national marine sanctuaries and estuarine research reserves. A pilot camp in July 2000 will involve selected classes of 5th graders and middle school-aged children. The pilot will lay the groundwork for a public opening in the summer of 2001. S.E.A. Lab Monterey Bay is envisioned as a year-round camp. Once fully staffed and equipped, S.E.A. Lab Monterey Bay could welcome 10,000-15,000 elementary and secondary school-aged children annually.
