The French governmental organization IFREMER (Institut Français de Recherché pour
l'Exploitation de la MER) began a program to develop a state-of-the-art teleoperated
vehicle or ROV (named Victor) about one year after MBARI began it's program for
developing Tiburon. Development of the two vehicles has proceeded in parallel, with
some cooperation between the two programs.
I will report on a recent Victor test dive series that culminated in a dive to
5,917 meters. The system architecture and operation of Victor will be discussed in
detail and, where possible, I will make comparisons to MBARI's ROV Tiburon.
