Second Mate, R/V Western Flyer

Reporting to the Master of the R/V Western Flyer, the Second Mate acts as a deck officer, navigator and officer of the day, as required by the Master. The incumbent ensures the maintenance of the vessel and equipment is in top condition at all times. This individual is responsible for the safe operation of all deck equipment.  The Second Mate assists the Master, Chief Mate, and Engineer in carrying out their duties at sea.  Duties include, but are not limited to: Performs all the duties of a seaman including painting, galley cleanup, and general tidiness of the vessel. The incumbent ensures the proper maintenance of deck equipment including windlass, winches and cranes, and reports all discrepancies to the Chief Mate. The Second Mate maintains and provides proper stowage of all lines, fenders, equipment, and ground tackle.

The Second Mate participates in the deployment and recovery of CTD rosettes and other scientific equipment. The Second Mate safely operates small boats, as required. This individual operates winches, cranes and capstans in a safe and effective manner. The Second Mate stands bridge watch as required by the Master, including preparation of charts for cruising.  The Second Mate acts as Relief Chief Mate in the absence of the Chief Mate.  This individual will be required to monitor and operate a Dynamically Positioned vessel during watch.

USCG 3rd Mate license with STCW endorsements is required. USCG Able Bodied Seaman’s / Life-boatman documents or equivalent is desirable.  High School diploma or equivalent and 2-5 years related experience is required. Previous experience with Dynamically Positioned vessels is desirable.  Must display proficiency in boat handling, electronic navigation, vessel and deck safety, and deck operations.  Must be able to direct the crew in the safe and effective operation of the vessel in the absence of the Master from the bridge.  Excellent communication and organization skills are required.  Must be able to work with diverse groups of people. The incumbent must be able to work in a hazardous marine environment.  The ability to work up to one month continuously at sea between port calls is required.
