MBARI is seeking a highly motivated individual with broad experience and training in marine biology, ecology, and oceanography to assist and collaborate on research and development projects concerning nearshore to deep-sea biology and ecology. The Benthic Ecology Lab has several research foci, centered mainly on (1) the influence of changing ocean conditions (ocean acidification, deoxygenation, warming) on the survival, growth, and reproduction of species, as well as the indirect consequences of ocean change mediated by species interactions, and (2) factors influencing the structure and function of deep-sea canyon and seamount communities, particularly deep-sea corals.
Master’s degree in a scientific discipline is required; PhD is preferred. Experience required for this position includes training in the taxonomy, ecophysiology, and ecology of marine vertebrates (fishes) and invertebrates. Relevant research experience includes studies of reproduction, early life history, and physiology of marine organisms; marine food webs (including stable isotope analyses); the influence of climate-related changes in ocean conditions on marine species, populations and communities; coupling between oceanographic and biological or ecological processes; population, and community modelling. Other skills applicable for the position include proficiency in video and image analysis, marine science diving, experimental design and statistics, data management, microscopy, shipboard operations (e.g., gear deployment/recovery, ROV operations). Expertise with LabView, Matlab, R, basic programming, web development, science writing, as well as oral and written communications is highly desirable. The candidate must be able to work with diverse groups of people. Participation in at-sea research cruises for specified periods is required.
