Research Engineer (Principal Investigator)

Founded in 1987 by the late David Packard, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) is uniquely dedicated to merging science, engineering, and marine operations for the purpose of developing state-of-the-art instruments, methods, and systems for advancing scientific research in the ocean. MBARI’s Technology Roadmap  sets forth a set of priorities that will be coordinated over the coming decade under three overlapping initiatives: Taking the laboratory into the ocean, Enabling targeted sampling, and Advancing a persistent presence. These initiatives were derived from a series of interconnected scientific challenges that exemplify the research themes articulated in MBARI’s Strategic Plan.

Presently, MBARI seeks a Research Engineer who will work as a Principal Investigator (PI) to advance collaborative projects in science and engineering. Desired focal areas include the definition and development of technology to observe and measure biological systems in the ocean. The development of novel analytical methods that advance and synthesize our understanding of the interplay between physical and biological processes in marine ecosystems is also of interest.

The Research Engineer works with Science Principal Investigators, technical staff, and marine operations personnel to develop and support collaborative research thrusts as outlined in MBARI’s Technology Roadmap and Strategic Plan. The incumbent will report directly to the Director of Engineering.

Research Engineers are evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Original research contributions, as evidenced by high quality, professional, scientific and/or technical publications, and presentations at national and international symposia.
  • The quality and value of scientific and engineering contributions in service to MBARI’s mission, near- and long-term plans.
  • The degree of service provided to the Institution and the marine science/engineering community at-large.

A Doctorate in Engineering, Ph.D. or equivalent is required. Applicants who are at an early to mid-stage in their career (equivalent to assistant – associate professor) with a demonstrated ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have postdoctoral work experience, a positive personnel management track record, proven ability to work with a diverse group of team-oriented people, and be capable of securing extramural funding.

Located in Moss Landing, California, the heart of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, MBARI offers ready access to the open ocean and deep-sea, embodies a balanced emphasis on science and engineering, has established programs in both autonomous and remotely operated underwater vehicle systems, control technology, ocean physics, chemistry, geology, and biology, as well as information management and ocean instrumentation research and development. MBARI has approximately 200 staff, and its facilities include state-of-the-art science and engineering laboratories, manufacturing and electrical fabrication shops, as well as an operations division that supports two MBARI-owned and operated research vessels, Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), a fleet of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), deep-sea cabled observatory, and other sea-going assets.

MBARI enjoys cooperative relations with a host of neighboring academic and government institutions, including Stanford University, Hopkins Marine Station, the University of California at Santa Cruz, the Naval Postgraduate School, and Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, offering many opportunities for collaborative research and education. Our partnerships with the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Center for Ocean Solutions also provide unique options for public outreach and for engaging policy makers in the ocean sciences.

Prospective applicants should send a current curriculum vitae, a statement of research interests, and the names and addresses of four professional references.
