Laser Raman Spectroscopy
PUP

PUP is a precision underwater positioner designed to provide the stability and precision positioning capability needed to collect Raman spectra of opaque targets on the seafloor.

The prototype version of PUP has two axes, and rigid legs. A camera, light and crossing lasers help to position the probe head. Future upgrades will include a third axis, adjustable legs, and pan & tilt capablity of the probe head.

PUP is deployed from MBARI's ROVs (Tiburon or Ventana). It is placed on the seafloor by the ROV manipulator.  It is controlled by a shipboard scientist using a GUI controller.
