Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute

The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) seeks a Principal Investigator (PI) to develop and direct a small team working in the general area of the fate and impacts of ocean greenhouse gases. A Ph.D. in the physical or biological sciences, D.Eng., or equivalent is required. Applicants who are at an early- to mid-stage in their career (equivalent to assistant or associate professor) with a demonstrated ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment are encouraged to respond.

Applicants should have a minimum of three years of postdoctoral work experience, a positive personnel management track record, proven ability to work with a diverse group of people, and be capable of securing extramural funding. A research focus that includes instrument development for detecting and quantifying key elements and chemical compounds that actively influence the growth and distribution of marine organisms is desired.

Founded in 1987 by the late David Packard, MBARI is a non-profit, private oceanographic research institute. MBARI is uniquely dedicated to merging science, engineering, and marine operations capabilities for the purposes of developing state-of-the-art instruments, methods, and systems for advancing scientific research in the ocean. For more information see MBARI’s Strategic Plan.

MBARI offers unique opportunities for advanced, technology-based marine research; cooperative projects between scientists, engineers, and marine operations personnel are strongly encouraged. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent research program consistent with that ethos. In addition, the new PI will be expected to engage ongoing MBARI programs that focus on development and application of stationary and mobile ocean-observing platforms, design and use of chemical and biological sensors, and studies of biogeochemical cycling in the water column and benthic environments.

MBARI enjoys cooperative relations with a host of neighboring academic and government institutions, including Stanford University, the University of California at Santa Cruz, the Naval Postgraduate School, and Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, offering many opportunities for collaborative research and education. Our partnerships with the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Center for Ocean Solutions also provide unique options for public outreach and for engaging policy makers in the ocean sciences.
