This Software Engineer will enhance the Marine Metadata Interoperability (MMI) project website and, using outstanding technical communication and community engagement skills, the successful candidate will perform a wide range of technical tasks to further the goals of the project. The incumbent’s work will be coordinated with the direction of the project's Principal Investigator and Steering Committee, as well as MBARI management, and will be geared to provide the maximum value to the oceanographic science community.
The range of tasks required for this position includes:
- Software development of new capabilities
- Software support for MMI products, website, and services
- Technical communication of all types, including all appropriate media and communities
- Community development, to engage communities in MMI and make MMI useful to communities
Depending upon skills and prior experience, other tasks for this position may include:
- Expert training and analysis in metadata-related disciplines (standards, vocabularies and ontologies, and systems)
- Project leadership for technical projects (demonstrations and knowledge development)
- Liaison with educational and library communities
This position will serve as a liaison between MMI leadership and many technical staff at other institutions who are contributing to the project, and coordinate that technical input, as needed. The software engineer will work with global technical and scientific contributors to maximize MMI's value, and will encourage collaborations and contributions from the entire range of oceanographic contributors.
This individual must be able to work as part of a large, sophisticated team, and with diverse groups of people, and must be willing and able to travel on occasion. The primary work site is at MBARI in Moss Landing, California. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated originality, leadership, problem solving skills, and professional performance in carrying out a range of technical assignments. Excellent communication and organizational skills, and demonstrated success or aptitude in creating problem-solving communities online, are required.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree, or equivalent, in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a physical science is required
- Must have at least two years software development experience and experience with website development and management, preferably including content management systems such as Drupal or Plone
- Experience with at least one of the following is required:
- Data management for oceanographic or marine sciences
- Metadata management
- Metadata standards or ontologies, especially in marine sciences
- Digital library technologies
Experience in any of the following is a plus:
- Object-oriented development in Java (ideally using an integrated development environment)
- Python, Perl, CGI scripting, web server programming, user interface design, information catalogs, and support of science-oriented data systems or data management systems
Please note: This position currently has funding for two years. The Principal Investigator anticipates soliciting additional funding to continue the position beyond that point.
