MBARI has openings for Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) pilots with an electronics or mechanical background. We are seeking intermediate to senior-level pilots.
Working as a team, the ROV Pilots ensure the safe and efficient operation of MBARI's remotely operated vehicles and associated oceanographic equipment. The pilots support the scientific exploration of the Monterey Bay and surrounding waters and facilitate the integration of prototype and production equipment to enhance the scientific capability of the ROV.
The ROV Pilot effectively pilots and conducts operations of the ROV to facilitate the safe and timely completion of the defined task for the Chief Scientist and maintains the ROV to ensure reliable operation in conjunction with other ROV pilots and technicians. The pilot ensures the safety of all personnel and equipment associated with the ROV and its operation and may assist in the development and maintenance of new scientific instrumentation, ships, and ROVs.
The operations and maintenance of the core ROV is the primary responsibility.
Qualifications:
- A.S. in Electronics, Mechanical, or equivalent education, and minimum three years demonstrated success as an ROV Pilot is required.
- Working knowledge of local area networks, serial data communications, fiber optic telemetry communication, and power control systems is preferred.
- Working knowledge of acoustic navigation systems and scanning sonar systems is required.
- Basic computer skills are required. Use of word processing, spreadsheet and CAD programs is preferred.
- Experience in maintenance of mechanical and hydraulic systems is preferred.
- Must be able to apply job skills and follow established policies and procedures to complete a wide range of difficult tasks.
- Trouble shooting skills for mechanical, electrical, fiber optic and electronic systems are required.
- Involvement in development programs for scientific equipment and operational procedures is expected.
- Must be able to work well with diverse groups of people and to work well under minimal supervision.
ROV Pilots must be able to lift a minimum of 35 pounds, step up three feet, work in hazardous marine environment, and work up to 15 days continuously at sea between port calls.
