The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), located in Moss Landing, CA, seeks to fill a position focused on systems biology of the photosynthetic marine eukaryotic green alga Micromonas. Marine algae are responsible for half the global CO 2 fixation. Micromonas will be used as a model system for understanding algal carbon cycling and responses to climate change. The physiological capacity of these organisms to thrive under the multifactorial impacts of low pH, low nutrients and community changes are currently unknown. This research aims to redress this lack of knowledge.
The project leverages knowledge from comparative genome analyses and an integrated team of investigators. The biology-directed engineering capabilities at MBARI and the nearby UCSC Center for Biomolecular Science and Engineering provide the foundation for this effort. Chemostats will be used to test pH, nutrient and temperature combinations; complete transcriptomes and physiological responses will be analyzed. Systems biology will be used for interpretation of high throughput data, novel gene function, genome and pathway analyses. The project involves collaboration with a high-throughput proteomics team, addressing the known divide between transcriptional and translational responses.
Postdoctoral applicant should have a strong publication record, excellent skills in experimental design and molecular biology as well as familiarity with bioinformatics. This individual will be instrumental in experiment design and execution as well as analysis.
All applicants must be able to work in both independent and team-oriented settings, and be comfortable interacting with a diverse group of researchers.
A competitive compensation and benefits package is offered, commensurate with a candidate’s qualifications and experience. Applicants should send their curriculum vitae, letter of intent, and 3 references to MBARI Human Resources. Please be sure to specify the position(s) that you are applying for in your letter of intent. The requested start date is July 1, 2010. One year terms that may be extended to three years in total, depending on job performance.
