Reporting to the Information Systems Manager, this individual contributes directly to the successful planning, deployment, and operation of the information systems in use at MBARI, primarily focusing on Windows/Active Directory and multi-platform web servers, but also working on and with Linux, Mac, and specialized systems as well. The scope of responsibilities for this position not only covers these systems as individual computer platforms with their associated system and application software, but also includes the MBARI-wide heterogeneous computer system composed of these systems in a large network infrastructure supporting a highly diverse computing environment in a technically advanced oceanographic research institute.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent in computer science, or related technical field, and at least five years’ experience in system administration on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X systems in a heterogeneous network is required. Demonstrated proficiency with all aspects of Windows Server 2008/2012 and Active Directory installation, configuration and application support in multi-forest environments is required, including patch management and solid understanding of LDAP and Kerberos authentication integration (e.g. client through backend SSO) with non-Windows applications. Centrify DirectControl experience a plus.
Demonstrated proficiency with Windows scripting (VBScript, PowerShell) is required. Demonstrated proficiency with web and Java application server administration (e.g. IIS, Apache, Tomcat/Glassfish/JBoss), running on Windows and Linux, including server security hardening and SSL certificate management is required. Administration experience with web content management systems such as Drupal, Joomla, etc. is desired. General Linux administration experience, including networking, X Windows, and general application support is highly desirable. Database server (SQL Server) and SharePoint knowledge a plus. MCSE qualification or equivalent knowledge, and multi-platform networking experience preferred.
The selected individual must possess effective verbal and written communication and organizational skills. Must be able to specify and recommend appropriate hardware and software configurations for specific user needs and scientific or engineering projects. Must be able to work with diverse groups of people. Must be willing to go to sea for occasional short specified periods.
