Assistant Engineer, R/V Rachel Carson

The Assistant Engineer provides key assistance to the Chief Engineer in the maintenance, efficient operation and safety of the engine room and all machinery spaces of the research vessel. The incumbent provides assistance in ensuring operational readiness of all mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems. This individual ensures the safe operation of the vessel as it pertains to the mechanical functions required to perform all normal research operations and ensures the vessel is fully maintained and equipment is in top condition at all times.

Assists in the deployment, recovery and watch standing rotations of the vessels ROV operations. Participates in the deployment and recovery of CTD rosette/sediment traps and other oceanographic experiments. In addition, required to operate knuckle boom cranes and oceanographic winches. Responsible for daily engine room start-up of main engines, generators, electrical equipment and related shipboard equipment. Responsible for daily engine room maintenance and regular engine room inspections while underway.

High school diploma or equivalent and 5 years related experience. U.S.C.G. DDE (Designated Duty Engineer) 2000 HP or better license unless otherwise determined to be quailed by the Master. Must display proficiency in operating and maintaining a variety of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems. Heavy lifting is required (up to 35 lbs.)

Ability to step up three feet. Ability to work in hazardous marine environment. Although this vessel normally returns to Moss Landing the same day it goes to sea, the individual may be required to work up to one month continuously away from homeport.
