Nautical chart of the Southern California borderland showing areas marked as chemical munitions dumps.

This illustration shows the location of the area in the Santa Cruz Basin marked as a chemical waste dump. The pink zig-zag line shows the path that MBARI's mapping AVU took as it performed a preliminary survey of the seafloor inside and outside of the dump area.

This illustration shows an image created using data from sidescan sonar on MBARI's seafloor-mapping AUV in an area in the Santa Cruz Basin marked as a chemical waste dump. The red circles highlight "targets"—sonar-reflective objects on the seafloor. The thin black line shows the path taken by the ROV Doc Ricketts as it videotaped some of the targets shown in the AUV survey. The white labels show a few of the objects that were positively identified during the ROV dive.

This still image from video captured by MBARI’s ROV Doc Ricketts shows one of many objects that could not be identified because it was covered with seafloor animals in an area in the Santa Cruz Basin marked as a chemical munitions dump.
