The heart of an ocean observatory |
|
|
Some time during 2007, this massive steel pyramid will be lowered onto the seafloor at a depth of about 900 meters (almost 3,000 feet). It will house and protect the electronic heart of the MARS deep-sea ocean observatory from damage by anchors or fishing nets. In this photo, MBARI technicians are lowering the frame into the MBARI test tank so that they can practice installing the electronics module using the remotely operated vehicle Ventana
