Laser Raman spectrometer

The laser Raman spectrometer allows scientists to analyze the composition of many solids, liquids, and gases, simply by shining a laser on them. MBARI chemists and engineers worked for years to create a laser-Raman spectrometer that they could use in the deep sea. In this experiment, they are shining the green laser onto a sample of methane hydrate (an ice-like solid containing water and natural gas) about 1,000 meters (3,300 feet) below the ocean surface. Methane hydrate sometimes collects in seafloor sediments, where temperatures are just above freezing and pressures are hundreds of times higher than at the sea surface.
