Collecting squid ink

Scientific field work often involves long hours and hard work, as well as moments of excitement. In this case, marine biologist Stephanie Bush had spent hours catching Humboldt squid from the back deck of MBARI's research vessel Western Flyer, so that she could extract vials of squid ink, such as those shown here. Bush also used video taken by MBARI's remotely operated vehicles to study many different species of squids releasing ink. She found that the squids released ink in a variety of patterns, creating smoke screens in which to hide, decoys to confuse predators, and even "smoke signals" that may warn their fellow squids of danger.
