A robotic laboratory

When most people think of robots, they think of mobile machines that look vaguely like people. This photograph shows a real 21st century robot that can perform DNA analyses 4,000 meters below the ocean surface. This complex machine is called the deep Environmental Sample Processor (D-ESP). In this photograph, the upper half of the instrument's titanium pressure sphere has been removed, revealing the "guts" of the D-ESP. On top of the D-ESP is a test instrument used to make sure that the robot is working properly.
