ROV Control Room

While the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Tiburon works on the seafloor a thousand meters below, scientists and ROV pilots monitor and guide its movements from the darkened ROV control room on board the research vessel Western Flyer. Some of the video monitors in the control room show views from video cameras and a sonar beacon mounted on the ROV. Others provide information on the ROV's position and the status of its mechanical systems. The ROV pilot and scientist visible in this image often share the control room with a copilot, a video annotator, a navigator, and three or four observers. Since many Tiburon dives last for 10 to 12 hours, both pilots and researchers spend a lot of time in this surreal environment.
