Abstract:
NOAA-14 AVHRR Provides a global coverage of sea surface temperature data. Images were produced from NOAA-14 AVHRR data for MUSE scientists to decide on real-time alterations to any courses they had developed during the 2-week experiment. Images were produced for the entire month of August and a week after the experiment in September. This data set was collected during the MUSE experiment.
Purpose: These data were collected for oceanographic research.

AVHRR Binary Flat Files were loaded into SeaDAS. SeaDAS is a comprehensive image analysis package for the processing, display, analysis and quality control of all SeaWIFS data products. It also displays AVHRR Binary Flat Files and many other data products. The file, mbari.lut, is used as the colormap for the images. Processing scripts include: musesst.pro for bulk processing, musebit1.pro, musebit2.pro, and musebit3.pro for bit shifting.

NOAA-14 is a part of a second generation of operational polar orbiters. The primary objective of this sun-synchronous satellite was to provide improved operational infrared and visual observations of Earth cloud cover for use in weather analysis and forecasting. Secondary objectives included measuring snow and ice and the sea surface, and gathering information on the vertical structure of temperature and moisture in the atmosphere on a regular basis.
