Abstract:
Continuous measurements of particulate and dissolved iron were made from an ultra-clean seawater intake towfish aboard the R/V New Horizon during the period of August 19-31. Dissolvable iron concentrations were measured continuously at the sea surface and particulate iron concentrations were determined daily near the drifter.
Purpose: These data were collected for oceanographic research.

Process_Description:
Iron (Fe) was measured by Flow-Injection Analysis with Chemiluminscence Detection (FIA-CL). The sample was loaded onto a chelating column and then eluted with acid and mixed with a series of reagents. Fe catalyzes the light producing reaction (the oxidation of luminol by hydrogen peroxide) and therefore the amount of light produced (measured by a PMT) is proportional to the amount of Fe present. The analysis is carried out using a series of computer controlled valves and pumps. The software was written in Visual Basic. Raw data is processed using a peak integration program in a Visual Basic program. It is then imported into excel as a "comma delimited" where the final numbers are calculated and stored along with lat/long and GMT date/time from a portable GPS that was serially connected to each mapping computer. Figures were created using SigmaPlot or Surfer.
