Our group studies ocean primary productivity, the microscopic organisms, phytoplankton, that form the basis of the oceanic food chain. To study phytoplankton we use instrumented moorings, satellites, and shipboard observations. In addition to our time series study of the Monterey Bay, in central California, we have participated in NOAA cruises from oceans around the world. Our recent studies of the El Nino along the west coast of North American is online. You can find out more about our projects on the Biological Ocean Group’s homepage.
Research programs at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) encompass the entire ocean, from the surface waters to the deep seafloor, and from the coastal zone to the open sea. The need to understand the ocean in all its complexity and variability drives MBARI's research and development efforts.
