Using a GUI FTP Client (Fetch) to Transfer Files To and From MBARI

This page provides information on how to access MBARI's FTP server to upload or retrieve files with a graphical (GUI) Mac OS X FTP client, using the Macintosh Fetch FTP client as the example. Instructions on using other types of clients may be found here.

MBARI staff members access the FTP server in a different manner, and should consult instructions for MBARI staff on the internal IS web site.

Obtaining the Fetch Client Software

The Fetch Client software can be downloaded from the Fetch Softworks site at http://fetchsoftworks.com. A demo version is available for evaluation.

Connecting to the MBARI FTP Server with the Fetch Client

After launching Fetch, a New Connection window will open. Enter the MBARI FTP server name (ftp.mbari.org) in the Hostname field in that window, confirm the Connect using selection is set to FTP, and click Connect. After connecting, the window will display the files and folders on the FTP server. For example, after connecting to MBARI's server, the window will look like this:

To navigate from one folder to another, simply double-click on the folder icon. The title bar shows you the name of your current directory.

Uploading Files to the FTP Server

PLEASE NOTE: The /incoming directory is the ONLY place that files may be put using anonymous ftp.

  • In the server window, navigate to the /incoming directory (i.e. double-click the incoming folder after you initially connect).

  • There are two ways to upload files to the server. The first is to drag files into the window. (You may select multiple files at a time.) You may drag them from your desktop or from any Finder window.

  • The second method of uploading files is to click on the button in the toolbar. This will open a file selection sheet within the application, where you can select one or more files to upload.

  • Note you cannot create subfolders in the /incoming directory. This also means you cannot upload folders to the incoming directory. Compress folders into ZIP archives or similar format before uploading. If you need guidance compressing files, see the compression information under Message Size Limitations on our email page.

  • As the files are transferred, the progress is recorded in the bottom of the window:

Downloading Files from the FTP Server

  • In the server window, navigate to the /pub directory (i.e. double-click on the pub folder) or other directory specified by your MBARI contact, and, if necessary, to the subfolder containing the files you wish to retrieve.

  • There are two ways to download files from the server. The first is to drag files from the window. (You may select multiple files at a time.) You may drag them to your desktop or to any Finder window.

  • The second method of downloading files is to select the file or files that you want to download and then click the button in the toolbar. This will automatically download the files to your default download directory defined in your Safari preferences.

  • As the files are transferred, the progress is recorded in the bottom transfer pane:

Disconnecting from the FTP server

  • Close the server window, or quit Fetch.
