Research cruises are great opportunities for students and technicians to become skilled in a variety of tasks. This photograph shows MBARI post-doc Pete Girguis explaining the fine points of sampling mud from a sediment pushcore. Pete is interested in characterizing the microbes that might be active in the mud. His enthusiastic students are Claire Currie, a seismology graduate student from the University of Victoria and Deborah Glickson, a a new geology graduate student from the University of Washington.
